The alleged Chinese food in the US was a culture shock. Sweet, bland and weirdly cooked it was nothing like Indian Chinese I’ve grown up on. Somehow I found a restaurant that had some very, very expensive desi Chinese. My starter was supposed to schezwan bhel but they were out of ingredients, so I ordered Gobi Manchurian expecting delicious, spicy, red cauliflower pieces. What I got instead was a bowl of delicious, salty, white cauliflower pieces. Although I was expecting the dish to be bad when I saw the color, I was pleasantly surprised. This was at Chinese Mirch, NYC.
